Summary
The EU’s REACH Regulation aims to ensure that metals and other chemicals are managed safely. This is carried out through four processes: the registration, evaluation, authorisation and restriction of chemicals. The REACH Regulation’s effectiveness is being reviewed in 2017, after 10 years of operation.
10
years of operation
Why is it important?
The non-ferrous metals industry has dedicated substantial resources to registering their chemicals under REACH. Several metals classified as hazardous now face REACH Authorisation.
The REACH Review is an opportunity for all stakeholders to take stock after 10 years of practical experience with chemicals management. We’re asking EU policymakers to make REACH better at identifying and controlling risks from the manufacturing and use of hazardous substances and mixtures.
What are we asking for?
We’ve identified five key areas where the REACH Regulation can be improved:
- Evaluate each substance’s actual exposure and risks
- Recognise the Risk Management Option assessment tool
- Make authorisation specific for each substance use
- Boost the use of REACH registration datasets
- Prevent duplication of risk management requirements
These five changes will make the REACH Regulation a better tool for effective risk management.
